Privacy Policy

Effective date: January 1, 2025  ·  Last updated: April 2025

Summary: Explain It Easy is designed with privacy in mind. We do not sell your data. The text you paste is sent to Anthropic's API solely to generate an explanation and is not stored on our servers beyond the duration of that API call.

1. Who We Are

Explain It Easy ("the App") is developed and operated by IntrePe. If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at explainiteasyapp@gmail.com.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

If you create a registered account, we collect the email address and password you provide through Firebase Authentication (Google LLC). This information is stored securely in Firebase and is used solely to authenticate you and maintain your account.

If you use the app as a guest (no account), we collect an anonymous device identifier generated by Firebase Installations to track your daily free-use quota. This identifier is not linked to any personal information.

2.2 Usage Data

We store the following in our own database (MySQL on Railway):

  • Your Firebase UID (a pseudonymous identifier assigned by Firebase)
  • Your current usage plan (registered, pro, or unlimited)
  • Your daily usage count and bonus uses (reset each day)
  • Session tokens used to authenticate your requests to our proxy server

We do not store the text you paste or the explanations returned.

2.3 Text You Submit

When you tap Explain, the text you entered is transmitted over HTTPS to our proxy server, which forwards it to Anthropic's Claude API to generate an explanation. The text is used only for this purpose and is not retained on our servers after the response is returned to your device.

Anthropic may process your text according to their own Privacy Policy. Do not submit sensitive personal information (e.g., passwords, social security numbers, financial details) through the App. A disclaimer is shown before your first request each session.

2.4 Advertising Data

The App uses Google AdMob to display ads. AdMob may collect device identifiers, IP address, and usage data for ad personalisation. You can opt out of personalised ads in your device's settings (Settings → Google → Ads). For more information see Google's Privacy Policy.

2.5 Locally Stored Data

Explanation history and your preferences (default reading level, app theme, privacy disclaimer acceptance) are stored locally on your device using Android's DataStore. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly use the export feature.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • Authenticate your account and maintain your session
  • Enforce daily usage quotas to ensure fair access
  • Serve AI-generated explanations via Anthropic's Claude
  • Display relevant advertisements via Google AdMob
  • Diagnose technical issues via server-side logs (logs do not include your input text)

4. Data Sharing

We share data only with the following third-party services as necessary to operate the App:

  • Google Firebase — authentication and anonymous device identification
  • Anthropic — AI explanation generation (input text, reading-level preference)
  • Google AdMob — in-app advertising
  • Railway — cloud hosting provider for our proxy server and database

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third parties.

5. Data Retention

  • Account and quota data is retained as long as your account is active.
  • Anonymous device records are retained to enforce daily quotas; they contain no personal information.
  • Session tokens expire after 30 days (registered) or 1 day (anonymous).
  • Server request logs are retained for up to 30 days for debugging purposes.

6. Your Rights & Data Deletion

You have the right to request deletion of any personal data we hold about you. To submit a deletion request, visit our Data Deletion Request page. We will process all requests within 30 days.

You may also delete your Firebase account directly via the App or by contacting Firebase support. Deleting your Firebase account removes your authentication credentials but does not automatically remove data in our own database; please also submit a deletion request using the link above.

7. Children's Privacy

Explain It Easy is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at explainiteasyapp@gmail.com and we will promptly delete it.

8. Security

All communications between the App and our servers use HTTPS. Passwords are managed entirely by Firebase Authentication and are never stored or visible to us. We apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data; however, no system is 100% secure.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
